We Audited 20 Top DTC Brands' AI Visibility — Most Are Invisible to ChatGPT

Updated August 2026
AI shopping is here. People ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI "what should I buy?" — and the brands those engines can actually read get recommended.
So we ran 20 of the biggest DTC brands through an AI-visibility audit. Most of them are leaving that traffic on the table.
Most famous brands can't be read by AI
There's a widening gap between being a famous brand and being an AI-readable one. A brand can dominate Instagram and still be nearly invisible when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation — because the AI can't cleanly parse its site.
To measure that gap, we audited 20 of the most recognizable DTC brands with the ViralSpin AEO engine, scoring each on two things:
- AEO — can an AI engine extract a clean answer from your site?
- GEO — are you authoritative and quotable enough to get cited once it can?
Here's the board.

The leaderboard
| Rank | Brand | AEO | Grade | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Casper | 95 | A | 86 |
| 2 | Ritual | 78 | B | 80 |
| 3 | Olipop | 78 | B | 87 |
| 4 | Brooklinen | 77 | B | 92 |
| 5 | Away | 73 | B | 75 |
| 6 | Hims | 73 | B | 81 |
| 7 | Rothy's | 72 | B | 95 |
| 8 | Warby Parker | 67 | C | 89 |
| 9 | Everlane | 67 | C | 82 |
| 10 | Rhode | 67 | C | 92 |
| 11 | Quip | 65 | C | 60 |
| 12 | Mejuri | 61 | C | 75 |
| 13 | Glossier | 48 | D | 81 |
| 14 | Harry's | 35 | F | 67 |
| 15 | Liquid Death | 35 | F | 89 |
| 16 | Oura | 35 | F | 81 |
| 17 | Gymshark | 25 | F | 39 |
Three findings that surprised us
1. The winner was the only brand with FAQ schema
Casper scored a 95 (A) — the highest by a wide margin. It was also the only brand in the set running FAQ schema. That's not a coincidence: FAQ/structured data hands AI engines clean, liftable question-answer pairs, and it's the single highest-leverage thing most sites can add in an afternoon.
2. Being famous isn't the same as being readable
Gymshark is a billion-dollar brand. It scored 25/100 (F) — nearly invisible to AI engines on-page. Oura, Harry's, and Glossier all landed in D–F territory too. Massive audiences, minimal machine-readability.
3. AEO and GEO can diverge hard
The most interesting cases are the split-brain brands. Liquid Death scored just 35 on AEO but 89 on GEO — the internet talks about them constantly (high authority), but their own site is hard for an engine to extract from. Rothy's (72 AEO / 95 GEO) tells the same story. These brands have earned the right to be cited — they just haven't made it easy for the machine to do it.
What this means for your brand
If household names are scoring D's and F's, the bar to stand out is low — and the window is open right now. The fixes are concrete and mostly technical:
- Audit your current score — free at aeo.viralspin.ai
- Add FAQ + Organization schema — the fastest lift for AI citation
- Allow the AI crawlers — GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot in robots.txt
- Answer-shape your top pages — question headings, concise answers up top
- Track it — measure whether ChatGPT and Perplexity actually mention you over time
